Off to Serve A Mission

I'm off to serve an 18 month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints! I won't be online during that time, so no new art will be updated until I return. I have a lot of things planned for my return, including returning to animation. But until then, I'm going to happily serve as a missionary for the LDS church.
I wanted to thank you all for supporting me in my artistic endeavors. I really appreciate all the feedback and critique I receive.
I will see you all in 2012!

Random bits of color

I feel like I don't finalize pieces enough. I have so much fun sketching out the emotions and expressions of characters that I sometimes stiffen up and lose all that character in the clean up process.

Here are two pieces that I splashed some color on. The first was a pencil sketch that I inked and colored in PS. To me, it seems pretty lifeless. The gesture was lost and there isn't much fun to the character or story anymore. The second sketch was a pencil sketch that I colored in PS without trying to ink it. I'm liking that one much better.

I'll work on keeping story in the clean up process.

The Best Camel

Tonight I wanted to draw the best camel.

His name is Bat and he is a crash test camel. His boss is the one with the goatee.

This is a bird flying a hang glider. He can fly himself but he doesn't think his wings are good enough.

It is a metaphor for life.

Sketches and just-for-fun work that have popped up on my computer and in my sketchbook recently.

I recently received my mission call to Farmington, New Mexico. I'll be teaching the Navajo Native Americans, which is an exceptional honor for me. I drew myself in Native American garb to celebrate. My friend Hannah Stebar and I also started watching a series called Into The West, which explains the history of the American West and the Native Americans. Fantastic show, I highly recommend it.

My friend Chelsea entered the MTC! It was bittersweet; I'll miss her but she'll do great as a missionary.

The final for Advanced Storyboarding was to create 5 beat boards for a live action film. Ryan gave us a script to work off of. The plot involved dead bats, black magic, and a zombie. Fun stuff, to be sure.

Lot's-O-Dragons

Here are some dragon designs for a 2D animated short I'm going to start here soon. The story is about an aristocrat who's constantly being beat in competitions by his neighbor. A dog show is coming up, so our hero decides to order a pampered pooch in an effort to finally beat his next door nemesis. Instead, he gets a baby dragon.

This first set of sketches here are explorations on different head shapes and attitudes.

This guy was my final for a while until...

this guy showed up. Thanks to my dear friend Anthony Holden for tips on making his grin more mischievous.

As promised, here is my final animation for Cynthia's animation class last semester. This is the work of the last three months. I chose to animate Tigger because he was the first thing I thought of when I heard this music. This was a practice in syncing animation with music, telling a story in the animation, and linking scenes so they match up and make sense. There are still a lot of glaring problems that need to be hammered out, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. I learned so much and he was incredibly fun to animate!

Here's my character design final.

My Animation final is coming up! I didn't have time to finish it to the degree that I wanted, so it will be up for your viewing pleasure after the holiday break.

Here's the first assignment I worked on for that class.

It still needs a lot of work, but this was a huge stepping stone for me and I learned a lot.

As a side note, if you haven't seen Disney's The Princess and the Frog yet, go see it.

Emulation week 1

This week in character design, we were assigned to emulate an artist with a style completely different from what we normally draw in. Since I never draw anime, I decided to take a whack at it. So I emulated the Korean artist Hyung-tae Kim, specifically his work on Magna Carta. I feel like I got the anime look down alright, but not Hyung-tae Kim's look down. So I'll be trying this again soon! It was crazy fun.
This is Suzume. She's a werewolf that has a hard time finding her balance between the animal world and the human world. She helps a mysterious party of renegade gypsies by using her ability to transform into a large wolf, but feels like she is more of a danger to the group than help. She is proficient at sword fighting as well as tracking. She rarely tells anybody her condition and trusts very few people.

Recent assignments for Character Design. The first was to caricature a celebrity, so I chose Charlie Chaplin. The emotions for him were fear, dreamy, happy, sad, and psycho.

Next was to do a self caricature. The emotions were silent leader, quiet killer, fancy free, vain, and easily irritable.

Hello all,

Just a quickie post before life gets too hectic.

I'm taking Ryan's Character Design class this semester, and it has been awesome.

First up are the silhouettes from last week. The themes were witches, spacemen (or women, in my case), female construction workers, and butlers.

The first assignment was to design a hillbilly and a maid.

The next was to design something out of a shape. The first was from a shape generator, the second I designed from a shape I just scribbled out.

Next we were to design a person or beastie out of trees, rocks, or clouds.

I've also got a ton of sketchbook pages piling up, so stay tuned.

I've been really missing my father lately. I sketched this up tonight because it's a way of helping me to remember. And because I wanted to show him that I'm still going for my dreams, no matter how impossible they seem right now for me to reach. My dad believed in me more than anybody else, and because of that I'm able to find the courage that I need to keep trying. So here's to you Dad; there's not a single day that goes by that I don't miss you. I love you, more than anybody could ever know.

Tobias and Highland, some Dinotopia characters I made up a while ago. I still remember sitting in my elementary school library and pouring over the Dinotopia books over and over again. Because who doesn't want a dinosaur buddy and a fascinating world to explore with him? I know I do.

I figured I should probably update this after almost two months of not putting anything up here.

So here are some sketches and other such art.

I draw wolves in church.

Once in a while, the wolf will dress in asian attire. Dinosaurs are there as well.

Basketball game gestures.

We've had a lot of birds hit our windows this spring. As sad as it is, it makes for a great drawing opportunity. This little guy was a Black Capped Chickadee. There was a large woodpecker, but the chickadee was less decayed so I decided to keep this blog PG and drew him instead.

Gina, Stephanie, TJ and I headed up to the Zoo last weekend for a sketch adventure.

The zoo is always trying to come up with new and exciting ways to get people to visit. This time around, they had giant owls riding wolves.

No, that giraffe is not from the Bean and it was in fact a living animal.

After that trip, I realized I had zero knowledge of big cat anatomy. So I studied big cats for several hours and then sketched this guy out.

I've never painted like this before, so it was a little challenging. And it's realistic. That's always challenging for me. I always have this temptation to change everything I draw into a Disney character.

Starting at the top and moving right:

-Prince Hyacinth, cursed with an abnormally large nose. Despite the rest of the world thinking his nose is large, he finds it attractive.

-Fairy.

-The Enchanter, who isn't a major character in the story. But our group decided to make him one of the main characters.

-The Enchanter turned into a cat. Because he can do that.

Holy flapjacks, Batman!

Sorry for the lack of updates. School started and things got a little crazy after that. School is awesome, by the way. I love the animation classes I'm taking. I'd just like to say how completely excited and overjoyed I am that I'm in the program! Here's to the next four most excellent years.

Okay, art time. (Not to be confused with Adventure Time)

Watercolor painting. It was an activity for an awesome book called Prepare to Board. The prompt was "I must."

Final for story boarding. I still have some line work to rework on this guy, but I'm uploading him for now. This is Benny, the socially handicapped rooster. He was raised by ducks and is surrounded by ducks, so he naturally has a social-phobia to work out. He can't fly or swim, but he's the largest and easily the most beautiful animal at the pond. He believes that he's a misfit and hates talking to other animals for fear of saying something completely ridiculous. He's insecure, shy, and painfully tries his best to fit in. About the only thing he's good at is being kind and crowing, which the other animals hate. Poor guy.

Okay, so Hawk drew this fabulous picture of me just because she's awesome like that. I was so pleasantly surprised! So I decided to draw her a picture too. Here she flying on the back of a hawk gryphon. Inspired by the comics Herobear and The Kid, which I absolutely adore.

Remember this guy? He's my character, turned into a giant bird creature. Because he can do that.

But Kenny and the Dragon came out and it's wonderful! (psst, Rachel! You would love the illustrations in this book. They reminded me of your art).

In which there is a most fabulous contest

My favorite illustrator, Tony DiTerlizzi, is holding a contest on his blog. His next book is Kenny and The Dragon, which stars a rabbit and his dragon friend. To celebrate the book's release in August, he's holding a 'Design Your Own Dragon' contest. The winner receives an autographed copy of Kenny and The Dragon before it hits the shelves, along with an original sketch by Tony. Needless to say, I was pretty ecstatic about the whole thing and promptly designed my own drake to enter.

Allow me to introduce you to Wyland:

Wyland doesn't breath fire, but bubbles. Embarrassed by his lack of fire-breathing skills, he sets off to find somebody who can teach him to be a proper dragon. What he learns instead is that he's not a normal every-day dragon, but a wish dragon. The bubbles he breathes are the wishes of children around the world, and only he can fulfill those wishes. He was a lot of fun to design, and even more fun to practice with coloration in Photoshop, because I need all the practice I can get with that program.

'Sketchin at the Zoo and Goodbye for now, Uncle Cal

First off, here's a bit from the Park City visit last weekend:

I really need to get me some watercolors so my pictures can actually have depth to them.

I went to the zoo today with the fam. It was so much fun to go up there and just spend time with family while sketching the animals. Those suckers are hard to draw when they move around all the time. Well, I guess I have a lot more sketching to do before I will be able to draw the way I'd like to draw.

Elephants. These were surprisingly some of my favorites from today. They're colored with grey Prismacolor, but the scanner killed it. Sorry!

The Rhino. Am I getting this gesture concept down?

The Peccary. Most of the animals were sleeping or in the process of falling asleep. That's okay because it's easier to draw them that way.

Zebra gestures. Though the bottom one looks like a gorilla. What was I drawing there? I can't remember.

Giraffe, Leopard, Tiger.

My favorite one of the day. Giraffe's are amazingly fun to draw.

This Arabian Wildcat looked exactly like my cat, Sealie. Just a wee bit bigger.

I'd also like to take a moment and say how much I love my Uncle Cal. He was a huge hero in my life and I'm going to miss him so much. But I know he's still with our family and will be watching over us. I can't wait to see you again, Cal! I miss you and I love you.

College life, Sketchdump, Wall E

School started Monday, and I started my college career with Figure Drawing and English. Figure drawing is fun just because I get to spend three consecutive hours drawing, which is not only refreshing but entertaining as well, and a nice break from the harsh homework schedule of English. Not that art escapes me in that class either. My old high school habit of doodling and drawing all over my notes is starting to creep back into my hand, and my notes are a mess. Funny story: I was writing my notes with a red pen and every time I set it down on my desk, it would roll to reveal that it was in fact a U of U pen. What are the odds? I'm glad I didn't get jumped by a die-hard cougar fan. But it's weird walking on the campus as an actual student and not a high school intern. I'm still animating, but I wish I were able to jump right into the program and start learning all I can so I can start to become a better artist. Anywho, I've sketched a bit to see if this is possibly coming true, as I hope to be able to add to the amazing artists in the animation program this fall.

Also, I saw Wall E and it was fabulous. More than that. It had some of the most gorgeous character animation I've seen since the classic Disney movies. The story was brilliant and I even cried at some of the scenes. I've found a new Pixar favorite. And the score by Thomas Newman is retro and beautiful simultaneously, which is an interesting combination that he pulled off brilliantly.

I highly recommend going to see it!

Disneyland RESCUERS

We are the Disneyland Rescuers, who save the Disney characters from the dark Maleficent and keep the park safe from evil!

Back from the Trek and KUNG FU

I got back from the farthest reaches and coldest corners of Wyoming yesterday. Despite the weather, the Trek was an incredible experience and I'm glad I had the opportunity to join my ward on a strong spiritual experience for the last time. It's weird being graduated, as I may never see the people that I've grown really close to again. I'm going to miss all the kids in my ward that I've known since elementary school. Growing up is tough stuff.

I did have a sketch adventure (as Anthony would call it) while on the trek. Armed with my trusty Moleskin sketchbook, several pens, and a Prismacolor marker, I tried to keep a record of what I did. Unfortunately, I didn't draw as much as I would've liked, as the weather was rainy and windy enough to rip my sketches from my hands. But I will post what I did draw.

My mind was on Kung Fu Panda that whole bus ride up, as I knew I would be missing it when it premiered the next day. So I drew up my own panda for fun.

Observational sketching was great on the bus ride up, because nobody really paid any attention to me sketching them. The bus ride back was so entertaining, as the younger kids and I sketched and hung out the entire way back.

This was my favorite sketch I did. It's my friend and her dad, who had been riding on the bus together because she'd become sick. They napped together sharing a pillow and I thought it was so sweet. Sorry for the vertical layout, I couldn't upload it horizontal as it is originally sketched!

I drew this as we all huddled together in the pavilion, trying to escape a sudden fierce windstorm that had hit us.

We got back at about nine yesterday, and a bunch of us went and saw Kung Fu Panda immediately after that (and after a nice shower from the 3 days of no bathing whatsoever. Nasty!) That movie was BRILLIANT! I loved it, especially the 2D animated opening sequence. The story was really good, and the characters were my favorite part. They were really well designed, and I'm very impressed with Nicolas Marlet's artwork on the characters. I was laughing hard at Po and loving him more with every second, and even became teary-eyed at parts. It was one of the best animated films I've seen in a long time, and I had a fun time just watching it, which is what makes me love a movie.

Artist's Block

I feel like I haven't had much inspiration for drawing lately. It seems like I keep drawing the same thing over and over again, and I hate that because I know that's not improving at drawing over all but improving at drawing one thing and one thing only. I've been sketching a lot, but I haven't done a final illustration for about a month now and I'm getting rather bored. It would seem as if I have slipped into another block and it's slowing down my art. What do all of you do if you get into an artist's block, any suggestions? Or what do you do when you need inspiration? What do I need to do with my art to take it to the next level?

This is a big shout out to Elder Gordon, by big bro who's nearly home from his mission. I talked to him today on the phone and he said that he's allowed to view blogs, so I'm going to update some animation for him to see.

CJ, if you're reading this, know how proud I am of you! You're doing a fantastic job and I can't wait for you to come home. I love you!

This is a quail animation I did last...fall, I want to say? Yeah.

This next animation is not finished, but I like it so far. It's Owen from the University's "The Lion and the Mouse" film. Owen is insanely fun to animate. The fact that he's a round, cute, Disney-ish character could be a factor in this. I'll upload the final when I get it done.

A Plethora of Sketches

Got my scanner fixed. Just a sketchdump that accumulated over the last couple of weeks. Most of these were drawn while listening to some new music I just recently got, which would explain the melancholy feel.

I will highly congratulate whomever can guess the soundtrack that I was listening to.

Of Owls and Snow

In between working on my animation application, I worked on this challenge for number 2. I've done the first, but I need to fix my scanner so I can color it. It's a platypus!

My scanner is DOWN and therefore I cannot post any art that I have been furiously sketching up in an attempt to be accepted into the animation department. Hopefully that will be running again soon and I can start to get back on track for this blog.

And Super Smash Bros. Brawl is far too fun for me to get any real work done.

"Sketchy Magic" Concepts

Concepts for the children's book I'm writing. I don't really have a title for it yet, though I've stuck with "Sketchy Magic" for a lot of the works I've been doing.

These are pages from Lorna's sketchbooks and her documentations of the world of Alraya. The bird is Faolan after he's transformed. Originally a headstrong elf, he had to transform temporarily to save both of their necks from a couple of baddies.

The other sketchbook excerpt is Lorna's take on entering the elf city of Arendii. The creature there is a mixture between a stag, bighorn sheep, and a lion and they're the steeds for the elves living in and around the city and its neighboring forest. There's also an elf sentry on that page and Lorna in a dress that she wore throughout the city.

Both were drawn with a pencil then water colored. More to come later.

Here's just a plethora of sketches from the last couple of days. I feel like I need to do something final and professional. I love just sketching and drawing whatever whenever I feel like it, but I want to do something good every once in a while. I'm working on an animation using arcs with character animation right now and that's keeping me on top of things. Due to a recent sweatbox meeting, I've been studying a lot on Glen Keane lately. I'm trying to use the same sketchy but controlled approach that he does in his artwork, but I think my art is turning up even more disgustingly sketchy!

It's been a hard week and thank goodness for the weekend. But life is still awesome.

First blog

I'll open up the first entry with some art, as that is mostly what this blog will be used for. The rat here was inspired by Pixar's Ratatouille. That movie is one of my favorites, the animation is gorgeous! I can hardly wait for the newest movie from Pixar, Wall-E.

The rest of these sketches are observational ones that I did during school. I love observational drawing, I just need to become better at it!
